Digital Archive Search Tips

The Animals & Society Institute Digital Archive is a searchable archive contains articles from the following publications:

  • Society & Animals Journal (S&A)
  • Journal of Applied Animal Welfare (JAAWS)
  • Sloth [Coming in 2023]
  • and even our historical Policy Papers

ASI Scholar, Student, and Professional members have access to everything in the ASI Digital Archive, but there are plenty of resources available for non-members as well, including all of Sloth (coming in 2023), and many Open Access S&A articles. To search only the freely available content simply set the Filter to “Open Access.”

Each article in this database has been keyworded and the abstracts, while not shown in the results, are also included in the search. For example, if you are looking for articles about insects, typing “insect” into the search will return all articles where “insect’ appears in either the title, citation, abstract, or keywords. If you are looking for Open Access articles on insects, make sure to select Open Access in the Filter before searching “insect.” The filter may also be used to search only one source, e.g. if you only want to see articles from S&A about insects, select the S&A Filter and then search “insect.”

Searching for “Research” and “Ethics” (but without the quotation marks, which would be ignored in this case) will return all listings that have both words, but not listings that have only one. Searching for “Research Ethics” (with the quotation marks) will return only listings that have those words together in that order, so a listing that has “Ethics, Research,” say, would not be returned. This is particularly useful if you are searching for a common term like “nonhuman animal,” that also contains common words. Searching without the quotation marks around “nonhuman animal” will show all the results that contain both words, which will be much higher than using the quotation marks, which will search only the full term and not the individual constituent words.

To download an article or paper (make sure you are logged in as a member if the article is not Open Access) click on the Article Title. To see an abstract (which are available to everyone) click on the corresponding “Abstract” link and you will be taken to the articles’ page on the publisher’s website.

Please note that due to agreements with the publishers, articles from S&A that are less than three years old, and JAAWS articles that are less than two years are not eligible to be included in the ASI Digital Archive. The latest two volumes have not yet been released by the publisher. Articles that have reached their two or three year threshold will be added to the ASI Digital Archives on an annual basis.
