Join Us in Celebrating 40 Years of the Animals and Society Institute!

We are excited to invite you to a special webinar commemorating the 40th anniversary of the Animals and Society Institute, a milestone we couldn’t have reached without your invaluable support!

Date: Thursday, June 20, 2024
Time: 11:00am – 12:30pm Eastern Time Zone

Among our featured guest speakers will be Dr. Erica Fudge and Zane McNeill. Dr. Fudge’s talk is entitled “What have Animals Ever Done for History?” Her talk will celebrate what a focus on human-animal relations has brought to the discipline of History. Dr. Fudge will look at how Human-Animal Studies has impacted an established academic field, along with the ways in which having a historically informed understanding might help us to address the ways we live with the nonhuman world. Dr. Fudge is Professor of English Studies in the Department of Humanities at the University of Strathclyde, Glasgow. She was the director of the British Animal Studies Network from 2007 to its final meeting in 2024. She is author of numerous books and articles in the field of HAS, including most recently: Quick Cattle and Dying Wishes: People and their Livestock in Early Modern England (Cornell, 2018), and has had essays included in The Routledge Handbook of Shakespeare and Animals (2021), The Palgrave Handbook of Animals and Literature (2021) and The Cambridge Companion to Literature and Animals (2023).

Zane McNeill will explore how the animal protection movement has historically relied on the prison and immigration-industrial complexes, as well as the carceral logics that normalize and perpetuate the violence of incarceration and deportation. Zane is the editor of Vegan Entanglements: Dismantling Racial and Carceral Capitalism (2022) and Building Multispecies Resistance Against Exploitation: Stories from the Frontlines of Labor and Animal Rights (2024). Zane previously worked as Director of Publications at the Institute of Critical Animal Studies and was awarded the 2022 National Lawyer Guild’s Legal Worker Award for their labor and animal rights.

This webinar is not just a celebration of our past achievements but also a call to action for the future. Together, let’s celebrate and continue striving for a world where we advance and share knowledge to improve human and nonhuman animal lives.
