Alexandra Feldt recently graduated from Knox College in Galesburg, IL.  While in school, she found new ways to explore her interest in animal rights including the development and completion of an honors thesis entitled "Combining the Roles of Printmaker and Animal Rights Activist: Images from the Slaughterhouse."  Alex would like to continue to be involved in the pursuit of greater animal welfare in any way possible, whether it be through her artwork, veganism, spending time with her rescued canine family members, plans to attend law school in pursuit of new skills to help animals, or working with the Animals and Society Institute.

Jill Howard Church holds bachelor's and master's degrees in journalism from James Madison University and the University of Memphis, respectively. She has worked for national, state and local animal protection groups (often simultaneously) since 1987. She is the former senior editor of The Animals' Agenda magazine, and her articles and editorials have appeared in newspapers, books and magazines both nationally and internationally. She writes freelance articles related to animals and the environment and is an award-winning nature photographer. She serves as the volunteer president of the Vegetarian Society of Georgia, and is on the board of directors of Compassionate Kids, Inc. She is currently working on her first book.

Kim W. Stallwood has held leadership positions in animal rights organizations for more than three decades. He was executive editor of the highly regarded Animals’ Agenda magazine. In 2002 he founded the Institute for Animals and Society, an animal rights public policy institute and joined with Ken Shapiro to form the Animals and Society Institute. Stallwood is editor of two anthologies of articles from The Animals’ Agenda (Speaking Out for Animals and An Animal Rights Primer both published by Lantern); authored a chapter, “Utopian Visions and Pragmatic Politics: Challenging the Foundations of Speciesism and Misothery,” in Animal Rights: the Changing Debate, edited by Robert Garner (Macmillan, 1996); and a chapter, “The Animal Rights Movement Must Be Politically Pragmatic,” in Animal Rights Opposing Viewpoints edited by Andrew Harnack (Greenhaven Press, 1996). Stallwood now lives in the UK where he serves as the ASI’s European Director. His blog is www.grumpyvegan.com.

Kenneth Shapiro earned his BA from Harvard University and his PhD in clinical psychology from Duke University. He is cofounder of Animals and Society Institute. He founded Psychologists for the Ethical treatment of Animals and the Society and Animals Forum. He is founder and editor of Society and Animals: Journal of Human-Animal Studies; cofounder and coeditor of Journal of Applied Animal Welfare Science; and editor of the Human-Animal Studies book series. His most recent book is Animal Models of Human Psychology: Critique of Science, Ethics and Policy. He is one of the developers of AniCare and AniCare Child, the only psychological treatment models for animal abusers, and trains therapists throughout the country on the use of these models.

Margo DeMello has a Ph.D. in cultural anthropology and currently lectures at Central New Mexico Community College, teaching sociology, cultural studies, and anthropology. She also is the Executive Director of House Rabbit Society, an international rabbit rescue and education organization.

Her books include Bodies of Inscription: A Cultural History of the Modern Tattoo Community (2000), Stories Rabbits Tell: A Natural and Cultural History of a Misunderstood Creature (2003), Low-Carb Vegetarian (2004), Why Animals Matter: The Case for Animal Protection (2007), and The Encyclopedia of Body Adornment (2007). Her newest books, to be released in 2009, will be A Cultural Encyclopedia of Feet and Footwear and the edited collection, Teaching the Animal: Human Animal Studies Across the Disciplines.

Frances Albrecht holds a Bachelor's degree in English from the University of Michigan. A former journalist and editor for The Washington Post, she has worked as an editor in the animal advocacy field for more than 10 years. She works as the senior editor for the Journal of Applied Animal Welfare Science (JAAWS) and previously served as the senior editor for the Society & Animals journal. She lives in Silver Spring, Maryland. She is the proud mother of three beautiful daughters, Amanda, Frances, and Kathleen, and the devoted grandmother of one companion animal dog, Dusky Albrecht (age 12), and one human, Devon Meeker (age 5).

Beatrice M. Friedlander is the Managing Director of the Animals and Society Institute, and previously served on its Board of Directors. She is a founding and current member of the Animal Law Section of the State Bar of Michigan, and of Michigan Attorneys for Animals. She serves on the Legislative Committee of the Animal Law Section and was active in the successful effort to overturn a law allowing mourning dove hunting in Michigan. She serves on the board of Jazzpurr Society for Animal Protection, Windsor, Ontario; and is a hands-on volunteer at Mosaic Feline Refuge and Leuk's Landing, both in Ann Arbor and at SASHA Farm, a sanctuary in Manchester, MI, where she can be found periodically (and happily) scooping litter and mucking stalls. Bee received J.D. and B.A. (Sociology) degrees from The Ohio State University, and a Post Baccalaureate Certificate in Non Profit Sector Studies from Wayne State University. She is a member of the Michigan and New York State bars, and describes herself as a “recovering attorney.” She and her husband share their home with cats Mica, Ginger and Blanco.

Suzanne McAllister is 5th generation Brooklynite. She has a BA in philosophy from Barnard College, and a PhD in counseling psychology from Fordham University. She currently runs an independent psychotherapy practice in Southeastern PA, where she combines mindfulness and meditation in her therapy work.  She has worked in industry as a management psychologist, and in academia as an administrator and teacher. Prior to training as a psychologist, Suzanne worked as a researcher and administrator in politics, government, the media, and non-profit organizations.

A life-long animal lover, Suzanne has gone to great lengths rescuing injured wildlife, including sharing her tub and bedroom with a mallard. She first became aware of the horrors of animal food production about 8 years ago. Since then she has become a vegan and has gotten involved in contributing to and volunteering at several humane, educational, and welfare organizations.  She is single and lives in Jenkintown, PA.

Elizabeth Cherry has a PhD in Sociology from the University of Georgia. She is an Assistant Professor of Sociology at Manhattanville College, where she teaches courses on social movements, culture, animals, the environment, and food. Her research focuses on animal rights and veganism, and she is currently working on a book comparing the animal rights movements in France and the United States. She is the moderator of the Human-Animal Studies group which ASI sponsors on Yahoo.

Hilary Handelsman has a PhD in English literature from Columbia University and has worked as an editor since 1995. She has volunteered for the Wildlife Center in Espanola, New Mexico, a rehabilitation facility for injured and orphaned wildlife, where she cared for the animals and helped write and edit the Center’s newsletter. In 2005 she started a vegan bakery, selling her products in cafés and farmer’s markets, where she appreciated sharing the joys of cruelty-free eating with her customers. Hilary lives in the mountains of northern New Mexico, where she shares her life with three cats, five llamas, and another human.
